From shop floor to ERP: get the foundations right.
A useful integration does more than move a production number into a business system. It preserves meaning, timing and ownership so that planning, quality and operations can make decisions from the same information.
Start with one business process
Choose a specific process such as production-order completion, material consumption or quality release. Identify who needs the information, how quickly it must arrive and what decision depends on it. Avoid connecting every available signal before a use case is agreed.
Decide which system owns each fact
An ERP may own the production order while a plant system records actual production. Document which system creates and changes each field, including product codes, units, timestamps and equipment identifiers. Resolve conflicting definitions before writing an interface.
Make identifiers and timing explicit
Agree how batches, orders, shifts and machines are identified. Specify units, time zones and event timestamps. Late events and corrected counts need a defined treatment so that reports remain explainable after a shift closes.
Design for interruptions
Review what happens when a network link or application is unavailable. Define local buffering, retry limits, duplicate detection and reconciliation. For plants with intermittent connectivity, operational continuity should be a first-class requirement.
Set security and support boundaries
Involve IT and operations in the architecture. Limit access to the required systems and data, keep credentials out of control code and define who can approve interface changes. A network design should reflect the risk of connecting operational equipment with business services.
Test the exceptions before launch
Alongside the normal production flow, test duplicate messages, missing identifiers, corrections and recovery after an outage. Agree how failures are surfaced and who owns the response. A working demo becomes an operating capability only when the exceptions are supportable.
